Assistant Project Manager – Heavy Civil

Metric are partnered with a national leading heavy civil contractor delivering major infrastructure projects across the U.S. We are currently supporting the hire of an Assistant Project Manager (APM) to join a high-profile project team.
This is a strong opportunity for a Project Engineer ready to step up, or an existing APM looking to gain exposure on large-scale, complex infrastructure work.
The Opportunity
Working alongside senior project leadership, you will play a key role in supporting the successful delivery of heavy civil projects, with responsibility across both field operations and commercial management.
This is a field-driven role, offering hands-on involvement in day-to-day project execution while developing your leadership and management capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Project Manager and Superintendent in delivering projects from start to finish
- Assist with project planning, scheduling, and coordination
- Manage subcontractors and suppliers to ensure scope, schedule, and quality targets are met
- Oversee RFIs, submittals, and project documentation
- Track project costs, budgets, and forecasting
- Assist with change orders, estimates, and value engineering
- Verify quantities, progress, and subcontractor payments
- Maintain accurate job costing and reporting systems
- Ensure compliance with safety standards and company procedures
- Support and mentor junior engineers on the project
What We’re Looking For
- 4+ years’ experience in heavy civil or infrastructure construction
- Background as a Project Engineer or early-stage APM
- Strong understanding of construction drawings, specifications, and processes
- Experience with cost control, estimating, and project tracking
- Ability to operate in a fast-paced, field-based environment
- Strong communication skills across field teams, subcontractors, and clients
Preferred:
- Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field
- EIT certification (or working toward it)
- Experience on large-scale or design-build infrastructure projects
