Assistant Grocery Manager

Position Purpose

The Assistant Grocery Manager supports the Grocery Manager in leading the daily operations of the grocery department to achieve sales, gross profit, labor, and service goals. This role assists with merchandising execution, inventory control, associate development, and operational compliance while ensuring a clean, organized, and customer‑focused department.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support execution of grocery merchandising, pricing, and promotional programs.
  • Assist in driving sales growth, gross profit, and inventory turns while minimizing shrink.
  • Ensure shelves are stocked, faced, rotated, and maintained to company standards.
  • Support accurate ordering, inventory management, and backroom organization.
  • Assist with monitoring department performance using sales, gross margin, shrink, and labor metrics.
  • Help develop and execute action plans to improve department results.
  • Support recruiting, training, coaching, and development of grocery associates.
  • Assist with scheduling to meet business needs while supporting labor control.
  • Provide day-to-day supervision of associates in the absence of the Grocery Manager.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, food safety standards, and operational procedures.
  • Maintain high levels of customer service and promptly resolve customer concerns.
  • Support seasonal transitions, resets, and special merchandising initiatives.
  • Partner with Store Director, Assistant Store Director, and store leadership to achieve store goals.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by store leadership.
People Responsibilities
  • Direct: Grocery associates when acting on behalf of the Grocery Manager
  • Indirect: Supports development and performance of grocery department team

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Prior grocery retail experience required.
  • Previous lead, relief manager, or supervisory experience preferred.

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong understanding of grocery operations, merchandising, and inventory management.
  • Working knowledge of sales, gross margin, labor controls, and shrink reduction.
  • Ability to analyze department performance and support execution of improvement plans.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to lead and motivate associates through hands-on support.
  • Comfortable using retail systems and standard business tools.
Travel Requirements
  • Minimal travel; may include training or meetings as required.
Physical Environment
  • Work is primarily performed in a retail store environment.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, and reaching.
  • Regular use of handheld devices, store equipment, and computers.
