About the role

Nexteer’s Legal Department is seeking a senior-level attorney to be responsible for several critical areas with a specific emphasis on U.S. federal and state laws. The successful candidate will be the primary in-house attorney for all legal and compliance matters within the geographical U.S. division and the lead coordinator for corporate commercial initiatives. The attorney will handle a wide range of challenging legal and compliance matters to avoid or mitigate legal risks of the company through a hands-on approach and will act as a strategic business partner across all functions of the company.

This position reports to the General Counsel and is located at the World Headquarters located in Auburn Hills, Michigan USA, but should expect occasional international travel throughout the year.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as legal advisor on commercial, corporate and transactional matters, including customer and supplier contracts, governance matters, litigation/pre-litigation, M&A support, product liability and warranty claims, and draft related legal documents.

  • Work in close partnership with colleagues in the Legal Department and business partners across the company, to achieve good business and legal results and facilitate smart risk-taking.

  • Other areas may also include finance, corporate governance, real estate, trade compliance, environmental and health & safety.

  • Lead or support special projects and corporate initiatives as assigned by the General Counsel.

  • Lead or support designated strategic transactions.

  • Supervise outside counsel, including budget oversight and invoice management.

  • Provide legal support related to sustainability initiatives and alignment with Nexteer’s Climate Roadmap.

  • Assist with the design and implementation of internal controls and compliance measures to support global regulatory adherence.

  • Develop and deliver training on legal and compliance topics, including commercial law, product liability, export controls, anti-corruption, competition/antitrust, and related areas.

Qualifications

Experience:

  • 10+ years of post-Bar admission experience, preferably in a reputable commercial law firm or in-house legal department of an international corporation.

  • 5+ years of manufacturing industry-related experience (e.g., general terms and conditions, commercial issues, litigation, compliance issues).

  • General business experience in the automotive industry gained at a Tier 1 or OEM would be a plus.

Skills/Training:

  • Outstanding technical legal skills, excellent oral and written communications skills and organizational skills, with strong ability to work under pressure on multiple projects crossing multiple time zones.

  • Proven capability to exercise strategic legal judgment with the ability to proactively identify and manage legal risk across commercial, operational, and regulatory matters, enabling informed decision-making in a global automotive organization.

  • Hard working and highly motivated, with a positive attitude.

  • Ability to communicate effectively across cultures and deal comfortably with legal projects in different jurisdictions.

Education Requirements

  • Bar qualification in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
