Assistant Controller – Construction

Location: Central New Jersey (On-site)

Compensation: $120,000–$140,000 + Comprehensive Benefits


The Opportunity


A well-established construction contractor in Central New Jersey is seeking an Assistant Controller to support the financial operations of a growing, project-driven organization. With a strong backlog of active projects across New Jersey and the surrounding region, the company continues to expand its finance team to support increasing operational complexity.

This role will work closely with the Controller and leadership team to oversee core accounting functions, support financial reporting, and help maintain strong financial controls across multiple construction projects. The position provides strong exposure to senior leadership and offers the opportunity to play a key role in strengthening accounting processes within a fast-paced construction environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with oversight of the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close process
  • Review general ledger activity, reconciliations, and journal entries prepared by the accounting team
  • Support preparation of internal financial statements and management reporting
  • Monitor job cost reporting, WIP schedules, and project profitability across active construction projects
  • Partner with project management teams to review cost tracking, billing progress, and budget variances
  • Assist with cash flow monitoring and forecasting related to project activity
  • Maintain and improve internal accounting controls and financial procedures
  • Coordinate with external auditors, tax advisors, and banking partners as needed
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior accounting staff
  • Support ongoing system and reporting improvements


Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 6–10+ years of accounting experience, preferably within construction or project-based industries
  • Strong understanding of construction accounting, job costing, and WIP reporting
  • Experience supporting month-end close and financial reporting in a multi-project environment
  • Proficiency in Excel and accounting systems; Viewpoint experience is a strong plus
  • CPA or CPA-track preferred but not required
  • Strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to collaborate across accounting and operations teams
