Warren Averett is seeking an Assistant Controller for an established company in downtown Birmingham. The Assistant Controller supports the Controller in overseeing the company’s accounting and financial operations. This role is focused on day-to-day accounting execution, accuracy of financial records, and supporting a timely and well-controlled close process. Strong accounting fundamentals and attention to detail are essential.

Reporting Structure

• Reports directly to the Controller

• Works closely with ownership and operations teams as needed

Core Responsibilities

• Assist with monthly and annual close processes for corporate and property management entities

• Maintain and reconcile general ledger, balance sheet, and bank accounts

• Prepare and review recurring journal entries, accruals, and allocations

• Support accounts payable and accounts receivable functions

• Assist with cash management, bank activity, and deposit tracking

• Prepare monthly financial reports and support budget tracking

• Assist with owner and investor distributions

• Support payroll processing and related accounting entries

• Assist with annual reporting including 1099s, workers’ compensation audits, and insurance audits

• Support internal controls, accounting policies, and documentation

• Coordinate with external accountants, auditors, and tax advisors as needed

• Perform other accounting-related duties as assigned

Accounting Focus

This position is accounting-driven and requires a strong understanding of:

• General ledger accounting

• Financial statements and reconciliations

• Real estate and property management accounting concepts

• Month-end close processes and supporting schedules

Measures of Success

• Accurate and timely financial records

• Clean, well-documented reconciliations

• Timely completion of monthly close tasks

• Strong communication and responsiveness

• Adherence to confidentiality and internal controls

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting

• Minimum of 3 years of accounting experience

• Accounting competency assessment with company CPA

• Proficiency in QuickBooks and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)

• Proficiency in Appfolio a plus

• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills

• Ability to manage priorities and meet deadlines

• Strong written and verbal communication skills

• Team-oriented mindset and professional demeanor
