Overview

Assistant Chief of Operations – NASA/Chenega - Titusville, FL

Lead daily fire‑rescue operations, guide and mentor crews, command emergency scenes, and uphold a positive, high‑performance shift culture. This role represents the Fire Chief on nights and weekends, supports training and record‑keeping, and works primarily a 24/48 schedule with occasional 40‑hour weeks based on operational needs.

Responsibilities

  • Leads and directs fire/rescue crews in daily operations and emergency response, serving as Incident Commander and ensuring safe, effective mitigation of all incidents.

  • Maintains extensive operational knowledge, including fire suppression, rescue, hazardous materials response, extrication, apparatus/equipment use, and facility/area familiarity.

  • Manages and develops personnel through supervision, performance evaluation, training oversight, and enforcement of policies, procedures, and safety standards.

  • Ensures operational readiness by maintaining staffing, capabilities, certification compliance, and continuous process improvement across the department.

  • Communicates and collaborates professionally with customers, contractors, and internal teams through verbal, written, and electronic methods.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Holds required fire service certifications (Fire Officer II, Instructor II, HazMat Ops, ICS 100–800), with ability to obtain Fire Officer III and Airport Firefighter within one year.

  • Meets all employment, medical, physical, psychological, and security‑clearance standards, including NASA physicals and an alcohol‑ and drug‑free workforce.

  • Maintains a valid Florida Class E driver’s license and demonstrates strong knowledge of firefighting strategies, tactics, and operational procedures.

  • Demonstrates clear, effective communication skills and the ability to read, write, and understand English for policies, instructions, and training materials.

  • Maintains a clean background with no felony convictions, disqualifying offenses, or illegal drug history; honorable military discharge if applicable.
