Aquatics Lifeguard

Performs general lifeguard duties during public and private time at the City's swimming pools for the purpose of rescue and control of the pool. Works in a professional manner with the public and performs duties designated by Head Guard, Pool Manager, Recreation Specialist over the pool and/or Recreation Services Manager.


Additional job functions may vary due to department or City needs/requirements. Assignments may include but are not limited to:

  • Performs lifeguard responsibilities on a regular basis.
  • Rescues persons in distress, in danger of drowning or incurring an injury.
  • Ensures proper behavior on the part of swim or other assigned class participants and respond quickly to potentially hazardous situations and accidents.
  • Maintains relevant program records and prepares related reports.
  • Administers first aid in the event of an injury.
  • Participates in all first aid and safety drills.
  • Maintains surveillance and supervision of patrons in the facility.
  • Acts immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of emergency.
  • Observes, informs and enforces all pool facility rules and regulations.
  • Work cooperatively with other staff members.
  • Be punctual and prepared for shift
  • Exhibits a professional and helpful attitude to patrons.• Completes required paperwork in a timely manner
  • Assists in putting out or taking down equipment and pool covers.
  • Complete weekly in-service swimming requirements.
  • Performs pool maintenance as needed, including routine, daily cleaning of locker areas, decks and other facility areas as needed.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job.

  • Must be at least 15 years old.

LICENSES, CERITIFCATIONS, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:Certain licenses and certificates, if required, may be acquired on the job as agreed upon by the City and employee. Subject to change based on operational needs.

  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certification.
  • Current American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer/AED Certification.
  • Qualifying candidates who obtain their valid Lifeguarding, CPR and First-Aid certifications may be eligible for reimbursement.

Work is performed primarily at a pool. Work requires active participation in program activities, requiring varying degrees of physical exertion. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

ENVIRONMENT: Outdoor pool environment, exposure to chemicals, sun or inclement weather conditions; work in or near water.

MOBILITY: Sitting, standing or swimming for prolonged periods of time; occasional heavy lifting; perform lifeguarding or water rescue procedures.

VISION: Visual acuity to recognize emergency situations and take effective courses of action.

OTHER FACTORS: Ability to work extended hours including evenings and weekends.
