Api Gateway Engineer

We are seeking a Senior API Gateway Engineer to design, build, and evolve an enterprise‑scale API gateway platform supporting business‑critical services. This role is suited for a technically strong engineer with deep API and gateway expertise who can influence architecture, standards, and best practices while remaining hands‑on.

You will be responsible for implementing and governing gateway‑level capabilities such as routing, transformation, traffic management, authentication, and policy enforcement to ensure APIs are secure, performant, and reliable by default. Partnering closely with application teams, platform engineering, SRE, and security, you will enable rapid API delivery while maintaining strong governance and operational excellence.

This role requires advanced experience troubleshooting complex issues in large‑scale, distributed production environments, with a strong focus on observability and resilience. You will proactively identify systemic risks, drive automation using Python, and contribute to continuous improvement of the API platform. As a Senior engineer, you will also mentor others and influence platform‑level architectural direction.

• Design and implement scalable, secure API gateway solutions for enterprise workloads
• Define and enforce API design standards, versioning strategies, and lifecycle governance
• Implement gateway capabilities including traffic management, transformation, and security policies
• Troubleshoot complex production issues and drive root‑cause resolution
• Build automation and operational tooling using Python
• Design and support observability, monitoring, and SLO‑driven alerting
• Collaborate across application, platform, security, and operations teams
• Mentor engineers and contribute to architectural decision‑making

• 8+ years of software or platform engineering experience
• 5+ years of hands‑on experience with API platforms or API gateways in production
• Strong expertise in RESTful API design, versioning, and error handling
• Deep experience with OAuth2, OpenID Connect, JWT, mTLS, and API security patterns
• Advanced proficiency in Java for API, gateway, or middleware development
• Strong Python experience for automation and tooling
• Experience with enterprise API gateways (Apigee, Kong, Azure API Management, AWS API Gateway, or equivalent)
• Solid understanding of observability (metrics, logs, traces, alerting)
• Proven ability to mentor engineers and influence technical direction

This is a Contract position based out of Chandler, AZ.

The pay range for this position is $66.73 - $66.73/hr.
