The Agricultural Commissioner's Office is currently seeking Field Assistant Trainee candidates. Under supervision, Ag Field Assistant Trainees perform a variety of field assignments in weed and rodent control and farm research.In addition to the duties outlined below, other responsibilities may include walking seed fields to inspect for diseases in crops intended for export.

This temporary position is 25-32 hours per week and expected to run from approximately mid-May through mid-August.

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other related duties may be required and assigned.

  1. Controls or eradicates weed pests alongside county roads; sprays oak brush, berry vine, and poison oak with a recommended herbicide; applies pre-emergent herbicide; sprays for noxious weeds; learns how and assists with loading, mixing, and safely apply the proper herbicide to the desired plant pest; prepares baits for the control of rodents and birds; learns and assists in mixing, weighing, labeling and bagging baits; sets start bait for the identified pest; helps keep spray equipment in good working condition; assists biologist in pest detection collecting insect and weed pests; assists in the placement of insect traps; and performs related work as required.
  2. Work performed in the Farm Advisor’s department consists of: Conducts field research trials by observing, collecting and analyzing crop growing data; conducts tests with fertilizers and develops sample control units of various crops to evaluate differences in growth and yield due to soil, water and fertilizer conditions; works with the 4-H camp performing a variety of general services in maintaining the pool and related equipment; and performs general office assistance work as needed.

Knowledge of:
Safe handling of weed and pest poisons, basic knowledge of mixing herbicides and pesticides.

Ability to:
Work in fields; handle poisonous materials safely; learn to assist biologists in their assignments; work independently; drive trucks. Possess a valid California Driver’s License.

Education and Experience:
Equivalent to some general maintenance work involving physical work and driving light-duty equipment.Essential Duties require the following physical skills and work requirements:
Requires the ability to maintain mental capacity of exercising sound judgment and rational thinking under varied circumstances; the ability to exert a small amount of physical effort in sedentary to light work involving moving from one area of the office to another; the ability to see; ability to hear and communicate orally; requires the ability to perform on-site field inspections including exertion of a moderate amount of physical effort to stoop, crouch, climb and lift in performance of assigned duties; ability to work around toxic substances in a safe manner; may be subject to uncomfortable working conditions including exposure to dust, noise, heat or cold; requires the ability to operate a motor vehicle; May require work performed in an office environment and may require prolonged periods of computer and monitor use.

Disaster Service Workers:
All Sutter County employees are designated as Disaster Service Workers during a proclaimed emergency and may be required to perform certain emergency services at the direction of the department and/or County.

License or Certificate:
This classification may require a valid California driver’s license.
