Position Summary
The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (Nurse Practitioner or Certified Nurse Midwife) is a professional level position responsible for completing physical assessments, diagnosis and treatment under protocol for patients and within legal scope of practice in the Family Planning and Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Clinic. Refers clients as necessary and maintains client records in a clinic setting.

Essential Job Functions
- Provide specialized care in gynecology and reproductive health services.
- Engage in well-woman care, male examinations, health education, contraceptive counseling as well as providing diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections.
- Obtain medical histories, perform physical exams, diagnose, and treat patients.
- Certified (or willing to become certified) in insertion of long-acting reversible contraceptives.
- Prepare and review patient consults for review with Medical Officer.
- Order and interpret diagnostic tests such as lab work.
- For quality assurance, review and acknowledge abnormal lab results utilized by RNs for treatment based on standing orders.
- Prescribe medications and perform procedures related to birth control methods (i.e., IUD, implants, wet preps, gender exams, and clinical breast examinations).
- Review and complete documentation to ensure service authorization, care coordination and required follow-up work is being completed in a timely manner.
- Provide education and resource referrals to clients regarding general health and program services.
- Contribute to the cultivation and promotion of an equitable and inclusive workplace.
- Create/update program protocols and standing orders in conjunction with Medical Officer.
- Participate in continuing education to ensure evidence based patient care is provided.
- Participate in Department and community emergency response training and drills consistent with job classification in support of public health emergency and disaster preparedness and use of incident command structure.
- Performs other functions as required to fulfill the expectations of the position and the goals and objectives of assigned program/projects and the agency.
- Assists in the training of new employees to the area.
- Responds to public health emergencies, as needed, and directed, aside from typical duties and schedule for the position.
- Contributes to developing and implementation of goals of the agency strategic, performance management, workforce development and quality improvement plans.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Well organized and efficient in managing multiple responsibilities.
- Through the principles and practices of public health nursing, provide support activities, as assigned, to ensure program needs are met. Practice medicine according to legal scope of practice for Advanced Practice Registered Nurse including prescriptive authority.
- Outstanding verbal and written communications skills.
- Ability to engage with and work with other personnel and teams.
- Ability to work with current computer software programs with general skill and competence including keyboarding and use of Electronic Health Records.
- Ability to work under minimal supervision and maintain confidentiality at all levels.
Qualifications | Requirements
- Master’s degree in nursing from a graduate nursing school with certification in family, adult health, women’s health, or midwifery required.
- Must possess current licensure as a Colorado Registered Nurse and Colorado Advanced Practice Nurse.
- Must possess prescriptive authority.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado driver’s license and be able to provide personal transportation for work-related business.
- Must obtain annual flu vaccination and any job specific immunizations. May be required to submit to a two-step PPD test.
Qualifications | Preferred
- One year of work experience in family planning/women’s health care nursing at the advanced practice nurse level preferred.
- Title X and STI experience preferred.
Work Environment | Physical Demands
Work is typically in an office setting. Work schedule is PRN up to 16 hours per week and is dependent upon patient volume. Start and end times may vary and APRN may be required to work beyond normal work schedule on occasion. Clinic operates Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Work may require some physical exertion such as long periods of standing, recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar activities. May be required to lift and carry up to 49 pounds on an infrequent basis, lift and carry up to 20 pounds on a regular basis, climb stair, bend, reach, hold, grasp and turn objects, and use fingers to perform routine medical procedures such as administer vaccines and insert contraceptive devices, operate computer or typewriter keyboards. The work requires the ability to speak fluently and to use normal or aided vision and hearing.
Work is subject to recurring and inflexible deadlines and frequent interruptions; may involve evening and weekend meetings/trainings and travel out of the area. Employee will be required to respond to emergencies, as needed.
Repetitive tasks and reoccurring deadlines are the norm and occasional out of town meeting/training may be required. May be called upon to respond to public health emergencies if needed.
