The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office is seeking a self-motivated, hardworking Administrative Assistant to join our law enforcement team. If you enjoy organizing, problem-solving, and coordinating activities to meet deadlines in a dynamic environment, we encourage you to consider this opportunity!

Note:This is atemporary, part-time position designed to provide administrative support to the Sheriff’s Office. While this role does not include benefits, it does accrue sick leave. The assignment is expected to last approximately 12 months, with the possibility of extension based on departmental needs and available funding.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, diligent, and proactive, with strong communication and organizational skills. They thrive in a fast-paced environment, can handle multiple priorities effectively, and understand the importance of confidentiality. Experience supporting management-level staff and coordinating complex administrative tasks is highly desirable.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Provide general office and administrative support
  • Conduct research and analysis for special projects
  • Assist in planning, tracking, and organizing budget-related activities
  • Perform basic fiscal tasks, including accounts payable/receivable using spreadsheets and accounting principles
  • Coordinate procurement and distribution of office supplies
  • Maintain, analyze, and report on administrative data
  • Research and process departmental documents, records, and forms
  • Respond to inquiries from staff and the public, helping resolve questions or concerns
  • Plan, prioritize, and coordinate Sheriff’s Office events
  • Provide general customer service and administrative assistance

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and coordinate work with minimal supervision
  • Basic understanding of budgetary principles and practices
  • Knowledge of municipal government functions and organization
  • Proficiency in computer applications, including word processing and spreadsheets
  • Developing systems for improving departmental efficiency and service
  • Data collection, analysis, and reporting skills
  • Strong research and problem-solving abilities
  • Clear and accurate English usage, including grammar, spelling, and punctuation
  • Business writing and report preparation skills
  • Operation of standard office equipment

Additional Requirements

  • Some positions may require typing at a net rate of 40 words per minute
  • Must be able to pass a background investigation; some positions may require a medical examination

Level I:
Equivalent to two years of college level course work from an accredited college or university, with classes in public administration, political science, business administration, economics or a related field and one year of responsible experience in office management, administrative analysis, personnel management, budgetary analysis, or accounting. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.

Temporary positions assigned to the Sheriff's Office as special project investigators require equivalent of completion of twelfth grade and a minimum of three years experience within the past five years in law enforcement in either a sworn or non-sworn capacity.

Level II (in addition to the above):
Two years of responsible administrative experience at a level equivalent to Nevada County's classification of Administrative Assistant I.
