Lake Washington Institute of Technology's (LWTech) Behavioral and Social Services program offers three degrees and three certificates:
- a Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) degree in Behavioral Healthcare
- an Associate of Applied Science-Transfer (AAS - T) degree in Behavioral and Social Services
- an Associate of Applied Science-Transfer (AAS - T) degree in Substance Use Disorder Studies(SUD)
- a Certificate of Proficiency in Behavioral and Social Services
- a Certificate of Proficiency in Substance Use Disorder Studies
- a Certificate of Completion in Substance Use Disorder Counseling
These applied studies in Behavioral Healthcare prepares students for work in the integrated treatment of mental illnesses, substance use disorders, physical illness, and poverty. Graduates are prepared to enter the workforce, advance in their current employment, and/or enroll in graduate degree programs in related fields such as social work, addictions treatment, or counseling. Course times and modalities vary: mornings, evenings, and Saturdays. All Substance Use Disorder(SUD) courses are fully online, offered in synchronous or asynchronous modalities.
The AAS-T in SUD Studies and the Certificate of Proficiency in SUD Studies prepare students for entry into the Behavioral Health workforce as a Substance Use Disorder Professional – Trainee (SUDP-T) through the state’s standard educational pathway, as described in WAC 246-811-030.
The Certificate of Completion in Substance Use Disorder Counseling meets the criteria in
WAC 246-811-077 which allow certain licensed professionals to qualify as a Substance Use Disorder Professional – Trainee (SUDP-T) through the state’s “alternate training” pathway.
Given this combination of offerings, our SUD faculty serve a variety of learners, from those without any prior college experience to masters- and doctoral-level licensed healthcare professionals. All SUD coursework is taught online, with both synchronous and asynchronous courses. As such, SUD courses are taught remotely.
SUD Studies is part of the larger Behavioral and Social Services department. Department faculty work together across the variety of Behavioral and Social Services degrees, certificates, and courses.
This recruitment is to establish an applicant pool for future adjunct faculty vacancies. The college hires adjunct faculty on a quarter-by-quarter basis, dependent on enrollment. If you're selected for an interview for a potential future vacancy, a college representative will contact you.
- Teach college-level Behavioral and Social Services courses, with a focus on SUD courses
- Teach to the objectives of the approved curriculum
- Plan and develop a variety of instruction objectives and experiences appropriate to the program goals
- Identify individual learning needs of students and make appropriate adjustments
- Develop and teach lessons that foster and support cultural diversity and non-discrimination
- Teach productive and constructive study skills to students
- Maintain records which indicate student progress and meet college and accreditation requirements
- Follow disciplinary procedures as prescribed and deal consistently and fairly with all students
- Design learning experiences for the unique characteristics of individual adult students through classes, individual instruction and self-directed learning
- Post the class syllabus and students’ grades via the online course system (currently Canvas)
- Credentialingby the state of Washington without restrictionas a Substance Use Disorder Professional
- 2 years of behavioral healthcare and/or social service work experience in the treatment of substance use disorders
- Strong understanding of Washington State licensing requirements for Substance Use Disorder Professionals and Substance Use Disorder Professional/Trainees, including education, supervision, experience, and examination.
- Strong understanding of required content: survey of addiction; treatment of addiction; assessment; diagnosis; treatment planning; case management; relapse prevention; pharmacology; physiology of addiction; adolescents; American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria; individual, group, and family addiction counseling; and SUD law and ethics.
- Baccalaureate degree in addiction studies, social work, counseling, psychology, or sociology
- Strong understanding of behavioral healthcare issues, treatments, and systems of care
- Support for the values of holistic, client-centered work
- Abiding hope in recovery for each person
- Readiness to teach the use of both harm-reduction and abstinence-directed strategies
- Demonstrated ability to work successfully with students, staff, and community from diverse backgrounds
- Excellent communication skills and ability to function as an effective team member
Preferred qualifications
- Master's degree in social work, counseling, psychology, addictions studies, or sociology
- Licensure by the state of Washington without restriction as a clinical social worker or mental health counselor
- 5 years of behavioral healthcare and/or social service work experience.
- 2 years of clinical supervisory experience
- Collegiate teaching experience
- Distance learning experience
- Community or technical college experience
- Recent teaching experience in postsecondary and or vocational/technical education using a variety of methods, including synchronous and asynchronous classroom
- State licensure as a behavioral healthcare provider without restrictions.
- Familiarity with local behavioral healthcare organizations
- Experience working on interdisciplinary teams
- Experience working with and communicating with historically underrepresented communities
- Experience in writing course curriculum
- Evidence of recent professional development activity

CompensationPlacement on the faculty salary schedule is based on an individual assessment of education and experience. The salary for part time faculty contracts shall be based upon the number of credits assigned the faculty member, the type of class taught, and the rates contained in the part time faculty salary schedule currently in effect and labeled Appendix B.

BenefitsOnce part-time faculty have worked 50% full-time or more for two consecutive quarters(with LWTech or combined with other community/technical colleges), Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, Disability and other insurance benefits are provided as currently administered under Public Employees Benefits Board, State Retirement Plan and a Deferred Compensation Plan; sick leave accrues at 1 day (Prorated based on % of FTE) effective upon employment.
