Job Summary:

The Multimodal (MMDL) Account Manager is responsible for managing and growing a portfolio of small to mid-sized freight forwarding accounts with a focus on specialized and multimodal shipments. This role supports a mix of drayage, flatbed, over-dimensional (OD), and project-based freight, requiring strong operational expertise and the ability to manage shipments from quote through delivery.

This individual will work hand-in-hand and support one of our Sr. Business Development Representatives to serve as a key point of contact for their customers, ensuring organized execution while maintaining flexibility to operate across the full shipment lifecycle. Success in this role requires a deep understanding of port operations, transloading solutions (including “trifecta” moves), and specialized freight, along with the ability to manage accounts and support business growth.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned accounts, building strong customer relationships and ensuring high service levels.
  • Manage and grow a portfolio of smaller freight forwarders, identifying opportunities to expand business.
  • Quote, plan, and execute multimodal shipments including drayage, flatbed, OD, and specialized project freight.
  • Oversee shipments from port to rail release through final delivery, ensuring end-to-end visibility and execution.
  • Coordinate permits, routing, regulatory compliance for over-dimensional and specialized loads.
  • Source, negotiate, and manage carrier capacity across drayage and over-the-road (OTR) networks.
  • Collaborate with carriers, terminals, steamship lines, and internal teams to ensure seamless operations.
  • Act as both a strategic account manager and hands-on operator, maintaining organization while executing day-to-today logistics.
  • Resolve service issues, mitigate risks, and drive continuous improvement in processes and execution.
  • Apply and uphold internal operational standards (“The VPL Way”) while contributing to process consistency and scalability.
  • Support knowledge transfer from Sr. Business Development Representative and develop autonomy to manage quoting and operations independently.
  • Contribute to revenue growth by enabling increased sales focus and unlocking additional account potential.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):

  • Gross Profit on accounts managed by the representative.
  • Number of active buying accounts managed on a weekly and monthly basis.
  • Number of loads built, scheduled, and serviced on a weekly and monthly basis.
  • Customer Satisfaction Feedback.

Required Education / Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Logistics, Supply Chain Management or a related field is preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience in freight brokerage, logistics, or supply chain operations.
  • Proven experience with drayage, flatbed, over-dimensional (OD), and/or project freight.
  • Strong understanding of port, rail, and transload operations (including complex “trifecta” moves).
  • Experience coordinating OD permits, routing, and compliance requirements.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite – Excel, Outlook, Teams, etc.

  • Excellent critical thinking, and problem-solving skills to be able to resolve issues is crucial.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to balance operational execution and account management.
  • Ability to collaborate and work well with different internal teams to ensure an elite level of service is provided to exceed customer expectations and be strong partners to our carriers.
  • Highly motivated, self-driven and enthusiastic about a fast-paced and at times high-pressure environment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to speak easily and communicate in writing and on a telephone for varying lengths of time and in random order.

Required Travel:

  • On demand, based upon job activity. Ability to commute to office locations independently including Waukegan and Chicago.
